Lets just say my first shot at this missed a few key games pretty badly. Lets try to find out why shall we?
FGCU vs. UNC
Before I get too hard on myself, look at the first half of this game. Now look at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Yea, pretty damn spooky right? But what the fuck happened in the second half? Well in the first half FGCU shot 3 threes and made one, AKA pretty much their average. Then in the second half they forgot how to basketball and panicked. They shot 1 for 8 from behind the arc in the second half. They just got plain cold/tired. (Read, there’s a reason UNC is a number 1)
Weber State vs. Xavier
Weber State started this game ICE cold. You can’t win a game shooting 2-12 from three. Other than a 21-6 run to start the game though WS kept pace with Xavier throughout the game, Xavier was just too consistent to let them make a big run. Credit solid coaching and just being a pretty impressive squad.
Stephen F. Austin vs. West Virginia
I FUCKING GOT ONE RIGHT. Given WVU couldn’t hold onto the ball to save their damn lives, but SFA shot exactly like they did all season. WVU got outplayed in this game plain and simple. One point is ringing clear in the tournament nowadays though, you have to be able to shoot the three ball in order to win. Case-in-point, Oklahoma.
Michigan vs. Notre Dame
Said it would be damn close, it was damn close. Impressive late run by Notre Dame to pull off the win. it also helps when you shoot 16% better from three than your opponent.
How about games I didn’t see coming though? Lets look at Michigan State.
Middle Tennessee vs. Michigan State
MTU falls over 20 points lower in their Simple Rating, almost 6% lower in effective FG%, and almost 10% lower in offensive rebound %. Numerically this game doesn’t make any sense. Izzo said it better than anyone else did really, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! MTU shot almost 20% above their average from three. Absolutely insane play.
Stephen F Austin vs. Notre Dame
This game made me mad. By the numbers SFA should’ve out shot and out rebounded ND all game. AND THEY DID. Maybe I saw the end of this game through my upset-glasses but in my eyes SFA had this game taken from them by the refs. I’m not saying ND didn’t put together a helluva run to win this game but how damn inconsistent can the calls get in a 3 minute stretch? Like this shit felt like there was some sort of continuity error between the two ends of the court, and that just hurts to say. I live to see games like this in March, it’s beyond exciting to watch teams pull off late runs like this but when the refs find a way to distract from how good a game truly was because of missed calls at the end of a game it just tastes wrong.
BUT... This ending was nothing compared to the incompetency displayed by both UNI and the refs in the fuckery that was Texas A&M’s comeback. Let me just say this first, there is NO excuse for blowing a 12 point lead with under a minute remaining, no matter how shitty the refs are. But my god did they blow it. Between letting A&M literally push UNI players right to the sideline to a complete horse shit 3-point play to get them in position to win, this ending just felt wrong.
Regardless, Oklahoma is still holding strong so I’ll see if I can’t find some time to do a BS piece on the final four numbers later to see what I’m expecting for this weekend.
